TOTSSF Gómez

Day 1521 of lockdown: As the countdown to the end of TOTS begins we continue to get a wide array of interesting options, creating daily team changes as new and interesting cards continue to hit the market.  The Serie A was no different and it did not take me long to choose the direction I wanted to go.  Alejandro Darío Gómez has been one of my go to cards since FIFA 17… I say go to but in reality I never really use this card until TOTS comes around, but when it does, this card is always worth the wait.  However, I do not believe there has been a FIFA more suited to Gómez like FIFA 20.  The short and lean body type mixed with a wide assortment of attributes leaves this card feeling like a F1 Mercedes.  The main concern coming into this review was always going to be the strength and whether or not Gómez and his quality could compensate for his smaller stature.  In the end I went for the FINISHER chemistry style to all but max out his shooting and provide some added of that added strength.  In the end the HAWK chemistry style might have been a better option but the difference would be minimal.  I played Gómez as the Left ST in my 4-4-2 all weekend as we dived into the abyss one more time.  You will note the La Albiceleste triangle, as I went for round 2 in the ring with Martinez (review to come) while utilizing the links and talents of Dybala all weekend. In the end, Alejandro Gómez was the Ant-Man in my squad all weekend:

Overall

Rating: 9.4/10
Pace Rating: 9.7/10
Dribbling Rating: 9.9/10
Shooting Rating: 9.5/10
Passing Rating: 9.5/10
Physical Rating: 6/10
Defending Rating: N/A

This rating is one of pure research and zero emotion.  I was saving this for my conclusion but I think it just needs to be put out there before I go any further.  I strongly believe that the 9.4 with this card is accurate and might be a slight injustice to Gómez given his weekend league returns… but where I am going is that if I gave this card a rating based on FUT enjoyment he would be 10/10 hands down.  There are a few cards I have used this FIFA (some in drafts) that just genuinely bring me joy to use.  Prince Griezmann (FUT Bday), any version of Eusebio and R9 (only used in drafts but still insane), TOTS Alphonso Davies, TOTS Suarez, and now TOTS Gómez all make my list.  I am sure there are more I have not used, and I am leaving a few out, but I think it just shows the good company Gómez is in.  The key with this card is all in the dribbling.  99 AGILITY, 99 BALANCE, and 4 STAR SKILLS… this card looks like a figure skater flying around the ice with tight turns and explosive pace… and this magic on the ball makes defenders around Gómez look like they entered the ice with boots on.  I cannot overstate how responsive this card feels on the ball and the left stick dribbling is just incredible.

Linkability

Linkability Rating: 4/5

The Serie A TOTS comes equipped with all you need for Gómez to get into any squad.  True the Atalanta options are not nearly as extensive as our past reviews, but there is a nice list of Argentine options to make those hybrids happen.

End Game Strength

End Game Strength Rating: 5/5

Strength might be the keyword here, and I will certainly get into that in my Good vs Bad section… but in the end, I was swayed by the qualities Gómez does possess, and not what he was missing.  The 99 ACCELERATION on this card is borderline insulting as Gómez takes off like a fighter jet and then he has the 93 SPRINT SPEED to continue causing issues.  I will say (and this is why I suggested HAWK chemistry style earlier) that at times I found Gómez didn’t quite have the pace that you would expect from 93 SPRINT SPEED.  However, you mix the crazy acceleration with the fantastic dribbling and you create a ton of chances by simply turning opponents… and then… Gómez buries his chances with incredible venom.  Left foot, right foot, it did not matter, the 99 SHOOTING was evident throughout the weekend resulting in 30 goals from 20 matches.  One weird observation was that Gómez has his own shooting trajectory that is lower than any card I have reviewed… he constantly hit the ball hard, but lower and especially on his left foot.  This actually came in handy and removed a lot of diving saves that I would have expected to lead to quality finishes into the bottom of the goal.  Interesting and effective.

Value/Coins & Good vs. Bad

Value/Coins Rating: 5/5
Good vs Bad Rating: 4.5/5

I think the 850k for this card is laughable, and of course there are quite a few reasons why this is.  I would heavily lean towards the fact that Gómez is not a classic FUT card and therefore FUT Managers just aren’t as interested in him, regardless of his ability.  Whatever the reason, this card is a steal, and while I have to move on to future reviews I would love this card in my red picks this week and he would revival even the most effective of bench options.

I mentioned the 30 goals, but Gómez also chipped in with 14 assists and this is a direct result of the excellent passing on this card.  So the question you might have is, how is this card getting a 4.5 after all of these rave reviews?  The answer goes back to my comment about pure research. No amount of fun or love for this card can hide the fact that Gómez is probably up there with the weakest cards I have used.  It takes a lot to lay a hand on this card, but when it happens, the ball is ALWAYS gone.  I swear in one match Big Virg sighed and the wind knocked Gómez off his stride.  This of course is compounded by the fact that the Sprint Speed isn’t 100% there and it did lead to some issues as the weekend got more difficult.  With the constant inclusion of more and more 90+ defenders I can see this card getting bullied more and more each weekend. However, I repeat, they do have to lay a hand on Gómez first… and with all of his tools it can be a lot harder than it sounds.

Closing Words

I went a bit overboard in some categories so let’s be short and sweet.  I brought in a personal FUT favorite to see if the tradition continues, and it does.  In fact, this would be up there and maybe even takes the crown as my favorite version of TOTS Gómez ever.  FIFA 20 was made for Gómez, and I think Gómez might just be made for some of you. Cheers for reading.
